Laser Welder Quote Checklist: Compare the Full Package

Conceptual illustration of metal welding joints

AI-generated conceptual illustration; not a documented test or a specific machine configuration.

A laser welder quote should describe the complete package needed to produce your accepted parts. Compare the exact equipment, demonstrated joints, accessories, site preparation, training and service commitments. A lower headline price is difficult to evaluate when two suppliers include different work.

This checklist helps Canadian fabricators prepare an enquiry and review the response. Start with your material and drawings, then use the same requirements for every proposal. Browse the HW Series handheld laser welder as a starting point for an application discussion, with configuration and suitability confirmed in the written offer.

Describe the work before choosing the configuration

List material grades, thickness ranges, joint types, access constraints and typical batch sizes. Include a representative drawing and the expected surface finish. Identify whether the weld is mainly a visible assembly detail or has additional functional acceptance requirements that a qualified reviewer must define.

Ask the supplier to identify the work demonstrated and the work still unverified. A sample on an easy-to-reach coupon does not demonstrate every corner of a large assembly. Keep the sample ID, machine configuration and inspection result together so that the quotation refers to a traceable trial.

Separate standard equipment from optional accessories

Scope to confirm with each supplier
Quotation itemWritten confirmation to request
Machine and delivery systemExact model, configuration, gun and cable arrangement.
Wire feeding and consumablesIncluded feeder, supported consumables and starter supplies where applicable.
Additional functionsWhich cleaning or cutting functions are included and what work they are intended for.
Site preparationUtilities, cooling, extraction and work-area requirements, with responsibility for each.
Commissioning and trainingActivities, duration, attendees, documentation and acceptance milestones.
After-sales supportWarranty scope, exclusions, service arrangements and spare-part ordering route.

Use explicit included, optional and customer-supplied labels. If an accessory is needed to reproduce the trial, it belongs in the scope comparison. Record any difference between the demonstration system and the proposed delivered machine rather than assuming the name of a series defines every configuration.

Compare accepted output, not only welding time

Agree acceptance criteria before the demonstration and record the actual results. Include preparation, positioning, welding, finishing and inspection in the comparison. State the sample quantity and retain records of rework or failed samples. A short demonstration should not be presented as a guarantee of long-run production capability.

For appearance-sensitive assemblies, the stainless-counter comparison guide provides a way to record finishing effort as well as welding time. Use the same finished-part requirement for the existing process and proposed process, and identify any assumptions that differ from normal shop conditions.

Clarify site preparation and responsibilities

Ask for the current installation requirements for the quoted model. Assign responsibility for electrical supply, gas arrangements, cooling where applicable, extraction, unloading and the intended work area. Have the supplier and appropriate qualified people establish the laser-safety provisions for the installation; do not treat a list of supplied protective items as a complete site assessment.

Record the documents and training that will be supplied. IPG's support page, for example, distinguishes manuals, service, spare parts and training for its own systems. Those are useful categories to ask about, not evidence of what another supplier includes. The Rise Tek offer should state its own commitments.

Make service and commercial terms comparable

Ask how support requests are opened, what information the service team needs and which parts are considered consumables. Record warranty coverage and exclusions, responsibility for transport or travel charges, and any stated service response terms. Avoid replacing written commitments with a general claim that local support is available.

Keep delivery, commissioning and final acceptance as separate milestones where the offer distinguishes them. Compare currency, taxes, freight, unloading and optional equipment on a consistent basis. Have unresolved terms clarified before making a buying decision; this worksheet records the discussion and does not replace the supplier's contract.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser power enough to compare two quotations?

No. Compare the exact configuration, demonstrated joints, accessories, site requirements and support scope. A power rating alone does not establish finished-part suitability.

Should training and installation be assumed included?

No. Ask each supplier to state the included activities, location, duration, responsibilities and exclusions in writing.

Does a cutting function replace a sheet laser cutter?

Do not assume that it does. Ask for the intended use and a demonstration of the required job; a handheld function and a dedicated sheet-cutting system have different production roles.
