Where roundness has to be right the first time.
Plate rolling and profile bending are standard processes in aerospace and aeronautical work — ducting sections, structural rings and frames, fairing skins and tank shells. What these parts have in common is that roundness and repeatability are not negotiable, and a flat end left by an under-specified machine has to be cropped or re-worked.
That is the practical reason four-roll machines are usually specified over three-roll for this work: the plate is pinched and pre-bent at both ends without being removed and re-set. Our guide to rolling a perfect cylinder covers the technique.
Heavy plate work is where four-roll pre-bending earns its cost. Pressure vessel shells, storage tanks, wind tower sections and hull plate all demand consistent pre-bend at the leading and trailing edge, since the alternative is scrapping or reworking the flat.
Curved structural members for bridges, canopies, stadium roofs and architectural steelwork are angle-roll work rather than plate-roll work.
